TWO SIMPLE TOOLS TO HELP
YOU DECODE BEHAVIOUR & SUPPORT FAMILIES WITH CONFIDENCE.
If you work with children and behaviour sometimes feels confusing, unpredictable or emotionally intense, you’re not alone. Most professionals are trained to manage behaviour. Very few are taught how to understand what the child’s nervous system and body might be communicating underneath it. The Beyond Behaviour Toolkit gives you two practical tools to help you slow behaviour down, think beyond the surface, and support children and families with greater clarity and confidence. These are tools you can use in real situations, not theory that sits on a shelf

When you download the toolkit, you’ll receive two simple but powerful resources designed to support professionals working with children and families.
A Practical Thinking Guide To Use In The Moment When Behaviour Escalates Or Feels Difficult To Interpret.
This tool helps you pause and ask the right questions before reacting.
Use it during:
-
Classroom observations
-
Behaviour escalation
-
Family visits
-
Transitions and emotionally charged moments
-
Situations where behaviour feels unpredictable
Instead of asking:
“How do I stop this behaviour?”
This tool helps you consider:
-
What nervous system state might the child be in?
-
What bodily signals could they be experiencing?
-
What environmental factors might be increasing stress?
-
What response would support regulation first?
When you understand the body behind behaviour, your response becomes calmer, clearer and more effective.

A Simple, Supportive Resource You
Can Share With Parents And Carers.
Many families are trying their best but are often left feeling confused about why behaviour keeps happening.
This tool helps professionals explain behaviour through:
-
Nervous system responses
-
Sensory overload
-
Interoception (body awareness)
-
Stress and regulation
It helps shift conversations away from:
“They’re doing it on purpose.”
and towards:
“What might their body be experiencing right now?”
This can reduce blame, build trust with families and create a shared understanding between home and professionals.

Behaviour Rarely Starts With Attitude Or Choice.
It Often Starts With The Nervous System.
When children feel overwhelmed, their brain moves into survival mode; fight, flight or freeze.
In those moments, the thinking part of the brain becomes less available.
This is why traditional behaviour strategies sometimes fall short.
Understanding the body behind behaviour helps professionals:
-
respond more calmly in difficult moments
-
reduce escalation and emotional overload
-
support regulation before reasoning
-
build stronger partnerships with families
-
move from behaviour management to behaviour understanding

Kate is a Sensory and Behaviour specialist with over 18 years of experience working with children with complex needs, neurodivergence and early life trauma.
Her work has taken her directly into classrooms, family homes and specialist services, supporting teachers, therapists, social workers and education teams to better understand behaviour through the body and nervous system.
In 2019 she established her own service, focusing on regulation-led approaches that help professionals move beyond behaviour management towards deeper understanding and more effective support for children and families. The Beyond Behaviour Toolkit shares two of the practical tools she uses in this work.
